Survey: Over Half of All Black Women Offended by Kardashian Role in Tyler Perry Film

22 Nov

by Dr. Boyce WatkinsYour Black World

Tyler Perry made the interesting decision recently to cast Kim Kardashian in one of the leading roles for his upcoming film, “The Marriage Counselor.”

Since that time, Tyler has been back pedaling from an army of “sistuhs” who want to smack him upside the head for his decision.   Some of them are offended by the fact that Kim K was chosen for the role over more seasoned and under-employed black actresses, whose list of qualifications are far superior to the empty and mindless resume of the “great” Kim Kardashian.

Holly Robinson Peete started the conversation by basically making it clear that she and many of her black female counterparts were not happy with Perry’s decision.

“We can always count on Tyler Perry to give a blacktress a job. So all across the world blacktresses are upset,” she told Access Hollywood.

I’ve only spoken to Tyler Perry once in my life, but found him to be an intelligent and reasonable man.  The first thing I told him was that I have almost never seen a Tyler Perry film voluntarily.  But the fact is that any black man with a mother, sister, daughter, aunt, niece or baby’s mama is going to end up being dragged into the theatre for a Tyler Perry movie at some point in his life.

The bottom line is that Tyler Perry’s entire career is elevated on the shoulders of black women.  If they step out on him, his audience would be reduced to two crickets sharing a box of popcorn.

So, to find out what black women think about Perry’s choice, we conducted a Your Black World survey on the matter.  We asked survey respondents if they are offended by the Perry decision to put Kardashian in a leading role.   A little more than half (50.6%) of our black female respondents said that they were indeed turned off.  The rest seem OK with the decision.

This reaction was enough for Tyler to come back with his public response to the backlash, which was interesting in itself.  It seems that Tyler is sensitive to the criticism, which is reflective of the fact that he is a relatively decent and thoughtful human being.  I do worry, however, that Tyler might be a bit too sensitive to public critiques (like the whole blow up with Spike Lee), which can make the crown of the king even heavier than it already is.  The bottom line is that when you’re the man on top of the pile, you’re always going to have someone who hates you for something.

On one hand, it’s difficult to write off the criticism of Perry’s decision to choose Kardashian for this role.  It’s hard to imagine a black woman being able to build her entire career off a sex tape as Kardashian has done.  Actually, I can’t think of a single thing that Kim does well, other than dating famous men, having sex on tape and showing up for parties.   Kim is simply famous for being famous, which hardly qualifies her to be a Hollywood starlet.

In this regard, Kardashian might be an offensive choice to black women not simply because she’s non-black, but also because she appears to be woefully untalented and inexperienced.

On the other hand, Perry’s decision to choose Kardashian was obviously a (seemingly savvy) business move.  Actors who find themselves angry when people like Kim K, Beyonce or 50 Cent are given movie roles would be wise to understand that filmmaking is more business than art.  Without being able to draw an audience and a following, filmmakers can’t pay the bills.  If they can’t pay the bills, the actors and actresses don’t have a place to work.  Let’s not get it twisted – money is the engine that sustains the contrived world of Hollywood artistic expression.

Secondly, the fact is that Kim is not the only actress in this film.  Tyler gives dozens of other roles to black actors and actresses, and it might be a wee bit petty for anyone to be upset that one untalented (but incredibly popular) white girl (well, not exactly white, but you get the point) got a chance to be in a Tyler Perry film.  His films should not be black renditions of the KKK, with a giant “Colored folks only” sign on the front door.  Tyler didn’t become the highest paid man in Hollywood without knowing how to draw a broad audience, and his fans should understand that.

Would I have chosen Kim K for this role?  Probably not.  But should others be so upset about Tyler’s decision?  I don’t think so.  Should Tyler be concerned that so many black women are upset?  Yes, he should be.  I learned long ago that making a woman angry can lead to an endless puzzle of despair.  Making 10 million women angry can make a man want to jump off a cliff.

The truth is that even if black women are unjustified in their disdain for Tyler’s decision to put Kim K in this film, the reality is that they still have the power to render him powerless.  So, similar to any healthy marriage in America, the words “Yes dear” might be most appropriate, even when you think the other party is off-base.  For right or wrong, if the sistuhs choose to hold out on Tyler and boycott his films, the honeymoon would end faster than you can say “Whatchu talkin bout Madea?”

Good luck Tyler….I’m curious to see how you pull this one off.  Even if you gave me the $130 million you earned last year, I wouldn’t trade places with you for the world.  OK, maybe I would, but my point remains clear nonetheless.

I believe that the angry ones will attend the movie nonetheless. His movies are too much of a draw and an event for them to resist.

I think you are sadly mistaken. I am a black woman I love all of Mr Perry work; I will not support and I am sure many other will follow suite. Us the Black women have lifted Mr Perry, this move suggest to me that we are no longer of use because Kim has Millions of followers. I say that is fine lets see if her millions support as us black women have supported.

tell the truth….I am disgusted…but like the old cliche: “The higher you are, the harder you fall…” Maybe TYLER is coming from another angle…..but at any sides of this “not well thought of situation.” I am not happy….

      • Chickie November 22, 2011 at 9:06 pm #

Uh, since you claim to know Black Women so well Mr. Perry. I hope you know that; if they do decide to boy cot. Sisters do stick together. We might disagree at first. However, if support is needed to get their point across as Black Actresses. Black Women will join together arm & arm and remind you of; after God himself, where you get your support from. Turn into OJ if you want too.

        I am with you Marlet!!

If you were a real woman, then you wouldn’t be going against another for his choices in life, that doesn’t affect you personally. He doesn’t pay your bills, & she’s not even white. If its a race thing, her father helped to prove O.J’s innocence. Ever heard of freedom fighters? Stop using race as a crutch! I’ve been black my whole life & I have yet to use my color to get ahead! I use my brain power, to write my ticket…..You were born black, learn to be more…. Black women didn’t make Tyler Perry, God did….Were does it say in the bible thou shall not cast whites in black movies? In that case, go find a black only drinking fountain, or better yet white only pies Claude!!! Grow up & find Jesus…. He made us all equal, so don’t go back to the pass….

    • KC November 22, 2011 at 3:53 pm #

Sorry to say I will not be one of them. I’m not angry by ay means…I just prefer to to spend my hard earned money on something that’s worth while. I don’t buy her products, watch her shows, or invest my time in people like that. So your “belief” is so far from real. I wouldn’t even watch it where they show bootleg movies….. I feel for the real black actresses that have work hard with quality skills that was passed up for this role.

      • David JB November 22, 2011 at 5:28 pm #

You said that you are “not angry by any means” but then use yourself to show that my belief is “so far from real.” How then can you say that my belief is wrong, using yourself as an example, when my comment clearly was in reference to those whom are “angry”?

Sign the “No More Kardashian” petition! gopetition.com

    • MyThoughts November 22, 2011 at 2:49 pm #

Why sign a petition to disrupt someone’s livelihood? Congress is already trying to do that for all of us. Just don’t watch if you don’t care to see. You sound ignorant, use your precious time to focus on things more important to you like increasing your own finances.

      • Nic November 22, 2011 at 4:52 pm #

@MyThoughts I have to say you sound ignorant for your comments. “Why sign a petition to disrupt someone’s livelihood?” Because this is America and @jane smith has the right to protest anything she finds offensive in any manner she deems fit.

Why shouldn’t she use her “… precious time …” to focus on K.K. if that is what is important to her? Perhaps she has already reached a level of financial security that allows her to spend her time on the internet signing petitions and criticizing others for their words and actions. Or do you believe you are the only one privileged enough to do that?

I just don’t believe in someone I don’t know having the power to cancel out the true talent of someone whom I have enjoyed throughout the years. Tyler Perry is still great in my book. I’m not going to put him down for a choice he made to put someone in his movie. That’s just dumb. Mr. Perry, you have given work to a LOT of Black People. Male and Female. So, he decides to work with K.K. does that cancel out all of the good things he has done?
        I think not.
I’ll go see it because I believe in support “my” people in their positive enedeavors.

Do he really wanna play?` .4. He has given jobs to many people and he gets what he pays for….5. No cancellation for TYLER….we have computers now…WE have a STRONGER voice… 6. Call Tyler…we are only responding to his decision…7. We have that right and enjoying FREEDOM! .

        MyThoughts,
Kim is a disgrace! She has no talent. She caught the public’s attention with a sex tape and has basically turned herself into a sexual cartoon (breast, buttock implants, super tight clothing, general porn appearance, etc.) And she is making millions off of shameful behavior. And now Tyler Perry is hypocritically trying to piggyback off of her trashy notoriety to make money. The real tragedy is that most adults can see her for what she is, but the tween girl demographic idolizes her and wants to look like her, dress like her, have a ‘career’ like her. The Kardashians set the example that you don’t need to study or work hard to get ahead, just look sexy and everything will come easy. This is not a formula that will work for most people….Don’t you remember Montana Fishburn explaining that some of her antics were inspired by Kim?? And the Kardashian shows are played practically around the clock on E, so most busy parents don’t have a chance of screening them out or supervising.

I’m not for censorship but I think that a large portion of the kardashian’s viewership are people that watch in a sort of captivated disgust/horror in the same manner that they would watch a car crash. As for Kim’s livelihood… she has earned enough to retire today at age 31. Figuring out what to do with herself if these shows end would be a ‘high quality problem’ indeed.

      • MyThoughts November 22, 2011 at 10:15 pm #

@Jane Smith All of the Kardashians went to college. They have business sense and I would be proud for my daughter to glean that from anyone no matter what their background. The “shameful behavior” is a wonderful example of what not to do. Going on to be successful and overcoming such an incident and constant criticisms shows resiliency. Dont repeat untruths, do your homework first. Lots of misconceptions that have been repeated here. Kim is not going to be THE marriage counselor, her role is defined on Tuler’s website, check it out and it might make more sense why she was selected.

      • jane smith November 22, 2011 at 10:51 pm #

        MyThoughts,
The only Ks that went to college are Kourtney and Rob…And Kim did not ‘overcome’ her sex tape fiasco. She orchestrated it. Maybe you need to do your research…

      • MyThoughts November 22, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

@Nic We’re all privileged to do as we please, including Kim K. I felt she sounded ignorant because every time she mentions Kim’s name she helps promote the very person she wants to eliminate from popularity. The media is who she should be going after, not the person.

      • Tamara Tooglamforu Little November 23, 2011 at 3:48 pm #

Right! It doesn’t matter to me who he decides to cast in his movies. People need to stop being so selfish. The man has and will continue to give BLACK women roles, and this will not stop them from working. For the most part- u pretty much knowwww who is going to be an actress/actor in a Tyler movie, here is a change for once, stop tripping on things that you clearly have no control over and try to figure out a way to make more money as well…geez.

Ask Michael Jackson……Ask Donald Trump……even Herman Cain….WHAT IS the cost for tplacing MONEY over the struggle.
We (BLACK women) as many others have survived without MONEY.

whomever wrote that article can defend t.p. as much as they want but that’s still a bad move, dude. personally i think all of his movies are simple slapstick elementary minstrel nonsense, since this is the only connect to the good chuch folk. all he gotta do is throw around a lot “jesus, lord have mercy”, church scenes, and one or two “bad dark skinned fools” being taught god’s “lesson”, and voila all those brainwashed people who have no money because the economic downturn left them without a pay check, will search high and low to find money because that’s gawd’s way and he always make a way outta no way!

Olivia I thank you for pointing out the church aspect of Perry’s simple and unfunny comedies . His Madea character is so poorly done that she appears more Drag Queen than woman , and his television shows seek to evoke laughter because people are fat and or dress funny .

People are free of course to like whatever they want , but the people who defend Perry because he is Black and is making money must think that Reality Shows are art and K Mart sells luxury goods .

For what is worth Tyler Perry is about making money and not “uplifting” the race. Why do we always give black successful people this cross to bear . It would be real satisfying to see some others take a leap and try . If anything he has probably generated more publicity for the money with this decision .

    • David2001 November 22, 2011 at 3:12 pm #

I think many people would give Perry a break as far as the criticism of his movies and TV shows if the quality of them improved. But they are no better than when he first started. As it stands now IMO he’s no better than a drug dealer that tears down the community. But instead of selling drugs he sells racial stereotypes, buffoonery and victimization to black women for quick cash.

Odd how black people criticize the worst of rappers and black minstrel comedians but try to justify Tyler Perry because he makes money and employs a few black people. Don’t the gangster rappers and black minstrel comedians make money too? We can say the same thing of a drug dealer or pimp. They make money and employ black people as well. As far as this Kim Kartrashian woman goes Perry makes trashy movies so she’s a prefect fit. Black women ought to thank him for not putting them in this role or ANY role in his films.

      • Diane November 22, 2011 at 3:43 pm #

THANK YOU David—I totally agree! I think Tyler Perry is a misogynistic a-hole and I boycott all of his Madea films. I see no humor in making fun of God-fearing older black women who, for a variety of reasons, are obese and probably have health problems as a result of it. Most of us know and love somebody like that—they’re not a target for humor, they’re someone we view with love and compassion, despite what others outside the community may think.

What he did to “For Colored Girls…” was a travesty. I really think he dislikes successful women and feels emasculated.
Kim K. trashes every man in her path so perhaps he’ll get his comeuppance!

        @David

Very well said, I couldn’t have said it better myself. I for one am not a fan of Tyler Perry’s work, majority of his work is mediocre and buffoonish at best. I for one can’t stand black people who thinks that every black person should rally behind him just because he is successful, and employs some black actors.

I’m also not suprised that he would employ Kim Kardashian for a film. He is clearly thinking about the publicity that he can get from the film, instead of artistic integrity. His church audience isn’t gonna like Kim Kardashian because everything about her is a disgrace.

Tyler Perry has proved time again that he is willing to coon his way to success, and as long as he has an audience that will support his coonery as long as he is black, he will unfortunately continue to be successful.

Tyler also called her a role model, who the hell want her as a role model for their kids? Black women isn’t upset because she’s non-black. I think black men need to stop saying that. If he choose to but her in that movie then fine.. I really don’t think he needs to write a letter explaining why he choose her. You don’t want to see it then don’t go. With more money coming in Tyler will become Hollywood (the same people that told him no).

    • MyThoughts November 22, 2011 at 2:57 pm #

She has risen above the sex tape and when people can respect her business saavy they’ll begin to understand that role models have more to offer. Someone has had a past like hers, even children, and they can learn how to overcome it through the adversity of criticism. I’m not a fan, however, I respect women in business. When we can stop finding flaws and trying to justify why someone doesn’t deserve opportunity, our individual growth can happen. Read Tyler’s reason for casting her in the particular role he has her in. Most are commenting blindly.

      • MEME November 26, 2011 at 2:32 am #

        @MyThoughts

Kim has NEVER risen above the sextape, and NEVER will. The fact that people still brings it up, proves that alone. That’s her legacy, a sextape. That will follow her for the rest of her life.

What business sense does she have??? Being the Spokeperson for useless products, doesn’t make her a business woman, that is not a person wit’ business saavy, in that case, the Jersey Shore kids must have as much business saavy as Bill Gates. If she had such “Business Saavy”, she would have read the fine print to that contract for those Credit Cards wit’ the predatory fees.

Kim Kardashian is nothin’ but a carbon copy of Paris Hilton. Everything Paris Hilton did, Kim is doing, the difference is Paris Hilton did it better, and she made her attention whoring look effortless, while Kim makes hers look desperate.

I Will not go see this counselor movie either

Perry crazy as hell if he think he can treat black women any way he want to thats

White women have always been the fall of black men…bad bad move Tyler…you only did that for more attention…she is not even an actress. Not even a white producer has cast her for anything. And that lame excuse you posted to draw youth is a lie…you already have your audience. Its not broke so what are you trying to fix

    • MyThoughts November 22, 2011 at 3:01 pm #

Kimberly Elise wasn’t an actress, but she got her big break. Kim K is not white, she is Armenian. Stop commenting based off of assumption. A bad move would be conceding to these ignorant racial comments. We are one!

      • Joplin November 22, 2011 at 7:01 pm #

Thanks for the misguided education. Up until your post, I did not know that Armenian was a race. I kind of always thought that they were caucasians like the rest of the Europeans!!!

And, why are you defending someone who is famous for “performing on a sex tape”, hanging out with other rich, famous and vacuous airheads like Paris Hilton and strutting around a ridiculous reality show with her obviously greedy family?

Please, tell me, what is the redeeming value in Kim and the Kardashian bond? Would you want your daughter to grow up and emulate her? Would she be a wonderful partner for you son?

When will we realize that because someone has a “hook” that spawns fame and money, does not make the person intelligent, worthy or role models for our children or culture, in general. There are so many more excellent role models, both currently and historically for us to laud and appreciate, but we waste time on the most vile and trashiest amongst us!!!

      • MyThoughts November 22, 2011 at 10:45 pm #

@Joplin Armenian is a classification of race, just as Dominican and Puerto Rican are Hispanic/Latino and Baijen, Jamaican, Haitian are Caribbean, West Indian, etc.

      • MyThoughts November 22, 2011 at 10:52 pm #

@Joplin Also, I would be proud for my daughter to glean business saavy not associated with shameful behavior from anyone no matter what their background. The “shameful behavior” is a wonderful example of what not to do. Going on to be successful and overcoming such an incident and constant criticisms shows resiliency. I am not a Kim K fan, I just don’t like condemnation, most people who are so riled over this have not led perfect lives and if the media deems her and her families misfortunes worthy of news why is there so much anger over that? Is everyone also boycotting the products that the entire family endorses?? Go down the list… Are the boycotting “E” for airing their reality show? Are they boycotting networks who show their commercials or news outlets that report on their lives???

I have enjoyed your film “Madea Family Reunion” because you gave hope for future reunions with our own families. While watching the movie I enjoyed Maya Angelou and the other actors and actresses my age. I am 67 years old. I have been reading about this Kim Kardashian and a Sex Tape. I have not, nor will I ever view it, but I think you are lowering your standards for money. I do not know if my grandchildren know about this young lady Kim Kardashian, because we don’t discuss such things, but I hope they boycott this movie. Back in the day, we boycotted unpleasant things. We passed the word around and things got done. I am ashamed of you. Her mother should be ashame of her. I will not see this movie.
    God Bless you.

  12. VB November 22, 2011 at 1:42 pm #

Who cares who Tyler Perry puts in a film ? It must have taken all day , or a visit to South Central to get enough Respondents to comment on this very important decision-lol.

Surely the criticism should not be about the acting quality , or lack thereof of this Kim Person the Media talks about every day for some unknown reason for Perry’s productions on Film or TV contain mostly B Actor’s and an occasional A Actor in some short ” window dressing ” role .

Quality in any measure cannot be used to judge Perry’s poorly written, terribly unfunny and simplistic stories about the most mundane aspects of Black Life ( you better watch out Madea is gonna get you for cheating ) I find it amazing that they could keep anybody’s interest for more than a minute or two .

So the interesting question to me is not about Kardashian , but how could so many Black People ( Dr. Watkins calling Perry’s audience broad was fiction of the highest degree ) like the simple and poorly done work of Tyler Perry ?

    • Bahati Sobukwe November 22, 2011 at 4:50 pm #

“Poorly written, terribly unfunny and simplistic stories about the most mundane aspects of Black Life”, is a powerful sentence!

      • VB November 22, 2011 at 5:45 pm #

Thanks Bahati I feel strongly that his work is ” kindergardenish ” .

Lot’s of other nonblack actresses he could have chosen. What she represents and what made her famous runs counter to what we should be teaching our children.

Half of black women should have BEEN angry with Tyler Perry long before casting Kim Kardashian. Tyler Perry’s films often portray black women in their bitter, pity partying, stereo typically unapologetic attitude way, or predicament. In his movies they(black women) are rarely if ever held accountable for their own actions..and course everything is the black mans fault. This article stated that Perry’s main fan base consist of black women so i certainly can see why he never held or will hold them complacent in their own plight & circumstance that many find themselves in. Attacking Tyler Perry for the inclusion of a particular individual who herself has quite the reputation with ummm black men seems to be off based & misguided. I shall await your predictable shaming tactics & insults….instead of dealing with the merit of my points. Worry about your overall image in his films PERIOD… instead of garnering unnecessary beef with some rich socialite(Kim Kardashian). I find it hard to believe ..if not for the popularity & polarizing image of the woman in question…this situation wouldn’t even be a blight nor even relevant on many of your radars.

  15. MyThoughts November 22, 2011 at 2:25 pm #

I agree that ot’s business but I feel for all the negative attention black women draw, the more people will go see this movie. Kim K. Has done nothing wrong, her past just like ours is just that, past. Whatever is believed about her, so be it, black women’s pasts aren’t clean either. I’m tired of the push to forge ahead and seek equality and opportunity with all these trivial exceptions. Get rid of the “crabs in a barrel mentality”. Stop hating on people making money in general. Stop talking negative and do something positive. If black women boycott, there’s a whole lot more fans that are going to be drawn to this movie than just black women who are upset that Kim K was chosen. Let’s be real…even Holly Robinson Peete should eat her words, who is she to say whether someone is more deserving than someone else? Kim K. and her family supports many charities, ones that support African causes and more. I am a black woman, I am not a Kim K. fan when it comes to her reality TV, but I can appreciate a fellow business woman. I cannot stand the comment that the Kardashians are famous for being famous, what does that mean? Someone or a group of someone’s deemed them worthy of a following. The publicity being given, the endorsements and attention are not all for nothing. They work to secure their futures like everyone else should be doing. It might appear easy but I’m certain it’s not, they’ve created a brand and people don’t like it for whatever reason and none of the ones I’ve heard thus far are justifiable, just envious and hateful. Get whatever you put your mind to and “what you deserve” is not determined by man, so their comments DO NOT MATTER or control your destiny.

  16. Clifton Richard November 22, 2011 at 2:33 pm #

Furthermore, using a just cause such as the lack of black women actresses in films is a legitimate case, however Tyler Perry probably employs more black women per capita than anyone else in Hollyweird. It would be wise to take that argument to other bigwigs, producers, directors etc. Tyler Perry by all accounts seems to be your best allie. Why burden him?…. because he decides to insert a non black woman in one of his latest films..hes done it before. I just feel it seems to be KIm Kardashian that is the issue with many of you.

  17. r u serious November 22, 2011 at 2:33 pm #

I have stopped buying and supporting people just because they are black. This is the same old story that has been going on for decades. At the beginning black male does good music/films for black people gets rich and switch their whole concept around. This is nothing new and I do not understand why we as black people keep falling for the dumb isht. I support music/films that I like and do not look for the person to be a certain race. If you don’t like the decision he has made do not go and see the movie it is that simple. We black women need to stop trying to hold these men up to a standard because at the end of the day when they get theirs they will “forget”.

  18. MyThoughts November 22, 2011 at 2:45 pm #

Kim K is not the marriage counselor and so what if she was? I keep reading that she has no talent, ok, well maybe this is HER chance. Stop trying to define her by her past, stop trying to define her period. Tyler’s past was abuse and homelessness, I’m sure many thought he would never be where he is but thankfully he didn’t allow ignorant criticisms to kill his dreams. People should be allowed to redeem themselves, let someone hold your past mistakes over your head for your entire life and try to take money out of your pocket and kill your future, keep you from getting your next job…just stop the stupid comments.

I am confident that this upcoming Tyler Perry film will become a great lesson for him. I predict that it will be the least attended and the least money making film he has ever made. It is possible that Tyler Perry is simply trying to widen his fan base to include whites but the majority of whites have already dismissed his films as being overly black oriented and is of no concern to them. Just like most blacks, whites are growing tired of anything Kardashian because there is a petition going around the Internet indicating that the Kardashian’s have worn out their television welcome; people (of all colors and creed) are now tired of following the Kardashian family on reality TV each week. Tyler Perry is obviously a genius film maker but he is living proof that even genius’ make mistakes every once in a while. However, to his credit he still stands out among other film makers in employing black actors and actresses that may not otherwise receive any viable roles in Hollywood today and with that said let us not be too hard him.

You wanta bet? They will line up in droves to see it. Black people just wanta laugh! They could care less about what Perry’s foolishness is doing to the image of black people!
It is funny, he makes a lot of money and he hire other blacks is their refrain to all of his buffoonery.
One of Randall Robinson’s characters , in his new book ‘Makeda’, made the point succintly with his statement the “trouble with black people is that we have no insides.” I thought it was a profound statement in that I understand explicitly what that means. I understand
that we have no sense of self that defines our history.

  24. Marta Gonzalez November 22, 2011 at 4:29 pm #

I don’t think it’s that deep. You should all just get over it! I could do without Kim K’s whiney nasal voice and some of her spoiled girl attitutes. But she is who she is. And I admire her business savy. If I met her, I would try to learn that from her instead of trying to break her down. Seems to me that she is the object of hate for some black women because she’s had more than her share of black men. They probably would’nt have dated you all anyway so….

    • Dolores November 22, 2011 at 5:28 pm #

      Ms Gonzalez,
Today was the first time I have ever wrote a comment on any article. Maybe its because I felt it necessary to say something about Tyler Perry’s decision to cast Kim Kardashian, or its because I might be intimidated by younger writers with a college vocabulary. What I know about the Kardashian family is that Robert was that O.J. Simpson was his best friend. But for you to dismiss this sex tape was all the acting this young lady has done, I don’t understand your morals. And as limited as my education is, I know “savy” is spelled “Savvy”.

      • Coot November 22, 2011 at 6:27 pm #

Yea….and I know TYLER spells: sellout?
Spelling cannot be the focus today.

    • Coot November 22, 2011 at 5:57 pm #

If you met her? The image of what she stands for …DID she incorporate TYLER into her business savvy” Hate is not good…(stop the flow of blessings) We are saying, If you want me to watch someone in your MOVIES….don’t pull a fast one one US…..YOU DO NOT SEE ANYONE of us discussing the other caucasions he has used in previous films… Watch this: GET KIM’s ex to be the counselor….I’d buy the T-shirt. Would somebody call TYLER…..

    • r u serious November 22, 2011 at 6:52 pm #

Please, get over yourself and Kim K. No one is jealous b/c she had sex with black men. Is it that hard to do, I don’t think so. Come back when you have something that is worth crying about.

  25. miss Edna November 22, 2011 at 4:59 pm #

Tyler Perry has the right to choose his leading lady but when you make your money mostly from black woman this is a slip in the face. With this movie he gave himself a loss at the box office i hope not because i love his movies and plays.

    • MyThoughts November 22, 2011 at 9:57 pm #

She IS NOT the leading lady! She has a hot mess relationship that’s her role. She IS NOT the counselor!

    • Black Convo November 23, 2011 at 8:30 pm #

She is not the leading lady though, she is the sidekick friend. And why does he owe it to us Black Folk to have a Black leading lady. It should not be a Black or White issue, it should be a movie issue. Hell, one day he might want to do an all white movie, I will be watching that 2, and thats because he has helped so many black people. As a black male, Im tired of seeing every brother in his movie besides him look like fools. However, I know overall that he is doing the black community a good justice, because he keeps black actors and workers employed. I dont agree with him on everything, but thats a good dude right there! He will not lose sales because those KIM K followers are going to be right there.

  26. OOMGO November 22, 2011 at 5:03 pm #

The only thing I have to say is being greedy is what made Tyler Perry make this decision. He has a huge audience and white people love him so this argument that he made this choice to increase his audience is pointless. And white people love everything black people when there is money attached and do when the black man can be tamed and overly friendly to them…which TP is on many levels.

History teaches us that this decision was about creating hype…as bright as TP is he cannot expect anyone with common sense to believe that he made this decision not knowing how black people who feel what it means to be black everyday would BE UPSET.(I mean he has the money that changes whites overt behaviour when they are around him in person).

Continue to be honest…the truth is an offence BUT it is not a sin.

    PEACE OUT & STAY BLACKER

There are too many beautiful black females in Hollywood to over look just because Kim is popular right now …
Trust me, it’s not a good trade off! …

  28. Mary November 22, 2011 at 6:21 pm #

I am also curious as to why Tyler Perry made the decision to use Kim Kardashian. I will not see this movie if she is in it, even if she is not the lead. The fact that she is in it at all is a turn off.

  30. mozlyric November 22, 2011 at 6:45 pm #

If you pay close attention, it is easy to see that black women have disappeared from mainstream media altogether. When was the last time a well together script came across the screen that embodied a fly ass relationship between a black man and a black woman? When was the last time a black woman played a major role in a hollywood film that was not necessarily “racially cast”? New movie releases cast the stereotypical black male role cast alongside a white chick. But where are the black sistahs??? Even in news media, hell where are black female rappers?? I’m personally not fond of how Perry casts black men especially that sham of an ending in Why did I get married Too? There is an open assault against the black fe-male image and the coupling of black people. Our country is NOT a post-racist society and with the rezoning of political lines all across America and over 30 states trying to undermine the voting rights act of 1965, the mix matching of black folk with white or foreign counterparts has NOTHING to do with racial harmony or colorblindness. There is a far more sinister plan in why hollywood in 2011 will not promote positive black family images. All the technological advances we’ve made as a nation, yet we still live in a racially divided society that works very hard to destroy the image of blackness, culture & beauty.

Black women all weaved out and still can’t be accepted for her uniqueness and queendom. We imitate women that have WEAVES themselves yet are passed off as their original hair. Wake up black people. We are beautiful and our women are beautiful. White women are not our friends (except the few that are genuinely cool no matter what). And this continuous cultural annihilation by Jewish ran media outlets is the proof in the pudding. Stop supporting the bullshit. Let them have it. Shame on you Tyler

    • Malachi White November 25, 2011 at 12:35 pm #

That’s the problem now with black women. They always wanna stick together, even against the black man. If you’re a woman of God, then who he puts in his movies shouldn’t matter to you, simply because a god fearing person should have no hate in their heart. The role calls for a white woman, so why are you judging? Isn’t this Gods role?

The last time I checked, hollywood was still hiring predominantly caucasians for all the juicy roles. I believe a lot of this crap is about Kim and the divorce, and her success, all of which is her damn business. If you don’t like her, don’t watch her show. Don’t buy her products, this is America. 3 years ago I wrote an article expaining why I thought Tyler Perry was colorstruck stating that his movies reveals that attitude within him.The black women who loved his movies attacked me with all their might despite my valid explanation revealing how in almost all of his movies, the villian is a darkskin black man and the hero is often light complexioned now here we are 3 years later and many of you are finally beginning to see the truth or sould I say…see it my way,…I have always thought of Perry as a self-hating shallow individual who has no place in being compared to the great spike lee
.its no surprised to me that he has shunned black females inhis movie roles. he has done it today and he will do it tomorrow as well for 2 reasons,1st because he is willing to shun his own people in return for the almighty dollar and 2 because he is as I said before, a self hating shallow individual with no pride. All that talk about how he as a director is using Khadashian because she is finacially feasable and able to draw a large crowd is pure bull— . everyone knows that if a movie wants to make money it has to cater to the black community, thats why you see a black man in almost every hero adventure movie or drama that comes across the screen because its a well known fact that if you cannot draw the black crowd you cannot make money besides Tyler Perry has never had trouble paying the bills before just look at his house and his wealthy lifestyle, all of that was created by black folks money so there is no shortage in Perry’s bank account, maybe a shortage in his pride but again, not in his bank account so whats his true intention? Perry wants to do what Perry does best “use his movies solely for money making purposes no matter who he offends or leave out.” uplifting the black community is not 1st and foremost in is mind I have always been able to see that Unlike Spike Lee, Perry is of that generation that has little or no sense of self, history of blacks in america and no sense of peoplehood, their only modis operandi and desire is money and nothingelse. What appeared to be a proud Black man giving valuable life lessons to hs people in all of Perrys films has been nothing more than a self-indulgent
,selfish, self seeking individual using the black community like a piece of carmin toilet tissue and mindlessly flushing it down the toilet.Soon Perry will get rid of Blacks altogether in his movies and thoe of you whoare stil disagreeig with me will finally see the light

    • Black Convo November 23, 2011 at 5:19 am #

I agree,Tyler Perry Has hired more black folks in his movie than anybody else. He can’t have an all black cast in every single movie. If you are familiar with the play Marriage Counselor, Kim K role was played by a white girl. Some roles are going to be called for a different race, why not KIM K. What about “A family that Preys”, it had plenty of white people. What about meet the browns the movie, Angela Bassetts best friend was not black. I do not agree with all of Tyler Perry’s movies at all, but this brother has done something that nobody else has. Where are all of the other black filmmakers at, they arent making movies so that they can hire all Blacks. I honestly feel like some of my sistas are hating on this Kardashian girl because she has these rich black men going crazy. It’s not her fault, she happens to fit the description of what most brothers like. Just like Beyonce and the rest of the lightskinned, long haired, big butt girls. I think that it was a great business move. He has done a lot for the black community, and he does not owe us anything. Black people we are so critical of each other, when we make it, it’s like you cannot satisfy anybody. Black women are angry for other reasons! If it had been a pretty black women, there would have been salt thrown on them 2. My wife loves TP, she could care less about who is in the movie!

      http://www.blackconvo.com

      • mozlyric November 23, 2011 at 3:09 pm #

Why not just employ the original white girl from the play? Since TP wants to pretend he is religious (although he actually makes fun of christianity) a tv ho is straight bull.

Everytime black women assert their strength its always put down as “having an attitude”. Trust, if this were some Jewish movie and Jewish women were offended a change would be made, just think about Rick Sanchez.

I agree, black sistahs are BIGGER than a Tyler Perry movie. But in reality, black women ARE his truest support base. And I ain’t mad at them

  42. mozlyric November 23, 2011 at 4:59 pm #

And for the record…it ain’t just about “one little white girl”. It’s about ALL the little white girls and other foreign relationship exchanges with black men that should irk all of our nerves. Yeah Kim K has had her fill of black men and hell yeah sistahs aren’t cool with looking at her ass in a Tyler Perry movie that is sacred ground for many sistah’s.
This racial fusion is not under any circumstances EVEN across the board. Tell me what other race, white or otherwise, is constantly and consistently bombarded with images of race mingling coupling? Are there any shows where white women are bombarded with their white men with black women or have to humble themselves to true black beauty….what if Sam’s new girl in Transformers was a beautiful BLACK model? White America would be in an uproar LOL! Are there any shows/movies where white men are bombarded with images of black coupling with their women? Hell even in Hancock, the frumpy not so buff white boy got to keep Will Smith’s white counterpart! Are black men bombarded with images of their women being coupled with white or other foreign men on a consistent/constant Hollywood screen basis?
The answer is NO! American media is upholds its white values/images first and foremost. Racial mingling is a joke on us, because we are no more loved and accepted by white America today than we were 50 years ago.
Black men should be just as fed up with this bullshit as black women, but obviously they are not since they are the direct beneficiaries of such competition. And don’t hand me that crap about a black woman’s attitude. Black men got attitude, hang-ups and such (which don’t bother me one bit). And the trashy white chicks that appear on tv are not the epitome of wholesomeness, morality, or righteousness. Black men don’t seem to mind their “attitudes” or that many white chicks are opportunists (ie, “Kim” on the Atlanta Housewives). So brotha’s don’t even try it when you all date white chicks that white men won’t even date (hello!)
So the problem is deeper than this surface shit. It has a lot to do with our own loss of sense of self and love for one another as a vibrant people of color. And Hollywood goes the extra mile to seal our self- hatred with cultural annihilation. WAKE up people. Tyler Perry is just a microcosm of a much grander scheme. We can’t even have a show without a token “white or foreign” part (remember the “Spanish family that used to be on the House of Paine show? Weren’t they a REAL pain in the ass?) What House Wife show shares the screen with black sistahs? Ain’t no black sistahs in Beverly Hills or Orange County? Is America afraid to see a black sistah being “kept” by a white suga daddy?
When is the last time you seen a natural sistah held in high esteem on the big screen? You haven’t and you won’t. So when folk want to come down on sistahs for her attitude and jealousies, it is coming from a place deep within that has been festering for hundreds of years of direct hatred against her natural beauty and well- being.
I sure as hell ain’t gonna turn to white boys just because it is fashionable and the media tries to convince me that most black men are undereducated and behind bars. I will ride or die with my black princes because I overstand and understand the real deal and can see the potential and goodness that our men have deep within. Perhaps black brothers need to embrace his sistahs the same and STOP participating in the cultural raping of your own race and the media abuse against your own women.
    Just say no!

Are you saying that TP should have only Black people in all movies, plays, and whatever that he is doing. I hate to see white shows with all whites, and just one little black spot in there, that is not the real world. I just do not think that TP can satisfy every black in the world. He is not the spokesperson for black women, even though he has hired alot of them. What filmmaker has hired as many black people as TP in the last 5 years?

      • mozlyric November 24, 2011 at 12:17 am #

        Hey Black Convo,
I think you missed the central point of my reply. Of course TP doesn’t have to hire only black people (even tho most mainstream media is white central without blinking an eye or inclusion of us), but there is nothing wrong with us expecting those who benefit from our monetary support to be responsible. In fact I’m tired of the whole damn system and personally don’t support bull shit from ANY one beit black or white. Just heard some news about the Rush Card, and think of how many black folk are foolishly supporting him BECAUSE he is black and his fees are worse than bank fees!

There is nothing wrong with us expecting TP to do the right thing when he is presenting us as a people (and likewise giving him room for his own artist expression.) I am wholly against giving black folk in positions of power and representation a PASS simply because they are black. Folk act like we can’t criticize the President because he is black. PLEEEEEEEEEEASE.

Tyler Perry got his claim to fame from the black community (mainly christian women) who supported his plays when hollywood didn’t even know who he was. Blacks helped him become the icon he is today, that is undeniable. So should he be like the rest of the world who take black money and support only to shun us when we are no longer of use for them? Come on blacks have been exploiting blacks since the postbellum era. Tyler Perry was doing something really good with his plays, they had meaning and substance. But once they hit the big screen its stereotypical central.

I don’t like how he has portrayed black men, and I didn’t even waste my time or money seeing Colored Girls after that mockery of Why Did I get Married TOO, cause Janet CAN’t act a lick, but bigger than that was the way Malik Yoba was ridiculed by a homosexual coming out of a cake then killed off.

So, no he is NOT the spokesperson for black women, but he sure has received a hell of a lot from black women. And he should be hiring a LOT of blacks because they are his original support base. Do you think white producers have this problem? No, because they don’t have to share their screen plays with blacks. So why do we always feel obligated to share? I saw the Marriage Counselor play. Good lessons as usual. He can hire any damn white girl he wants to, but don’t act like bruising the heels of his TRUE support base is nothing but frivolous.

        peace

(ps. glad you love your queen, I am likewise married to a beautiful black king (*_*)

    • Black Convo November 23, 2011 at 5:27 pm #

Oh yeah, I am married to a wonderful BLACK WOMAN, aint nuthing a white woman can do for me but clean up my house! I just dont want to judge the man off of one person he has put in his movies, as compared to what he has done. Ask Angela Bassett, S Lathan, Idris, J. Jackson, and all of the rest do they mind?

      • Black Convo November 24, 2011 at 1:08 am #

I agree with what you saying about him receiving most of his support from Black Women, and he could take what they are saying about this situation in consideration. I just do not want to throw this brother away because of this one ordeal. His good outweighs his bad. If we did not have this brother, a lot of these actors would not have jobs. Who in the world would have hired David and Tamala Mann? I love both of them for the type of people that they are, but acting, I would not call it that. Why did I get Married was kind of foolish as well as other movies, but I think we need this guy.

Oh My, here goes the crabs in a barrel people! get a life. T.P is in the movie making business. People who make and act in movies are just regular people, they are not perfect. they do it to make money, it is a career; It is a business not a country club or a church club, it is a business. If you all are angry at Tyler Perry,to not be or sound hypocritical start being angry at the many singers who started singing in and being supported by the black community and cross over to include a broader ethnic base; the actresses and actors who took rolls as pimps, prostitutes, robbers, and all the stereo types that others look at blacks as; your churches having a picture of a white Jesus, saints that is all white, your religious books that feature more white images that black. Kim is not the only person in the movie. most of the cast is black. For those of you who say that you all are going to boycott the movie, lets say that the boycott is successful and the movie is a flap. lets say that he lost a lot of money, lets see if this started a trend that eventually put him out of business, please follow, guess what no black actress will be employed they will all be waiting on Hollywood to give them a job, which we all know that its not going to happen. why would I as a Hollywood producer hire blacks actress, when I have white ones. yes I’ll put a few to not be seen as racist. you all follow. Think, a mind is a terrible thing to waste. Please people think before you react.

  44. AL November 23, 2011 at 5:56 pm #

I would just like to say maybe some of the Sistas out there have their reasons for not wanting to see Kim in this role..with that said the so called Sex tape featured another actor did we protest him I think everyone knew who he was and is…Alfie Woodard have been Married to a White Guy for over Seventeen years yet she was chosen for The family that Preys Sanai Lathan played a role that many Black women should have been angry about…my point is let’s not get caught up in all of this Hype..stay strong Brothers and Sisters and let’s move forward..Peace.

  45. What about Beyonce? November 23, 2011 at 8:35 pm #

I often think about how Beyonce has taken roles that seasoned unemployed actresses could take. However, there is no uproar about that and she is a horrible actress.

No Tyler, I will not see this movie. As a African-American female, the ideal of a woman playing in a movie produced, etc. by a African-American male is an insult to all African-American woman. She is famous for being famous. She has done nothing of substance. Just think, what African-American woman can pull off that type of “career”.
To each his own but Tyler, please do not become of this world but be in it.

    • Malachi White November 25, 2011 at 12:40 pm #

If you’re a woman of God, then why would you judge this man’s decision, when the role calls for a white woman? Why would you judge her pass, when you yourself has fallen short, as we all have? When he has forgiven you for your sins. When he gave his only begotten son to this world to save us all? Stop living this worlds life.

  47. Malachi White November 25, 2011 at 12:20 pm #

Once again here we go pushing our color around. This man didn’t make it because of black women alone. He made it due to hard work, dedication, & last but not lease God. We always wanna tell each other what we should do, like we made their decisions for them. Like we were there when he was sleeping in his car. Jesus pulled him out that situation because of love, not skin tone. A lot of you claim to be Christian,, but don’t think, speak, or act as one. If hate consumes your mind, then your heart can never be pure…..

  48. equal opportunities for all November 27, 2011 at 4:14 pm #

whatever happen to equal opportunity for all? Tyler Perry isn’t responsible for providing any group of people with employment. to say Tyler Perry can only cast black actresses (qualified or not) in his movie is unacceptable. i know black people everywhere will not stand for such a thing if the tables were turn so why do it?

  49. dena December 9, 2011 at 6:18 am #

I for one will see this movie to sit back and forget the hate in the world and people killing each other over noting of importance. Children learning to hate before they learn to love in their homes, just for an hour or two to laugh and feel that all is good, if not on a big screen – where can you forget to just laugh and see other Tyler Perry film not does not promote hate no matter what race or back-ground you come from. Lets remember we all belong to the human race and God makes no mistakes.

But just imagine if you added some great visuals or video clips to
give your posts more, “pop”! Your content is excellent
but with images and video clips, this website could undeniably
be one of the greatest in its niche. Excellent blog!

Black women didn’t make Tyler Perry successful! Hard work by Tyler Perry made him successful. When this man was aleeping in his car, where was all these stick with blacks at then? Now that he’s on top, black women have a problem? Holly Peete, you haven’t had a real paying job since 21Jumpstreet, so can the act. He can put who he wants in his movies! He has the H.B.I.C. (Oprah) & she doesn’t have a problem with it, so go find something to do! My beautiful black wife &more my black butt loved the movie &you she has never had to drag me to see them! I support my fellow blacks period! Not judge them for being successful!
