Stephanie Humphrey: A New Way to Finally Get Your Finances Together

25 Jul

Unless you’re Warren Buffett, there’s probably something else you could be doing to better manage your money (and he may not get a pass either!).  I know I am guilty of not being as diligent as I should be when it comes to keeping track of spending, staying on a budget, and a whole host of other financial sins.  But I think I may have found the app that can redeem me.

Mint.com is an amazing website that makes money management practically fool-proof.  Once you securely link your accounts, you can do just about anything with the information.  You can categorize each transaction by pre-set categories or create your own, set budget limits for categories, and easily track spending.  You can also set up goals for emergency funds, vacations, etc. and figure out how much to save to reach those goals.  There’s so much useful information there that has really helped me get much better organized financially.

So I’m sure you’re thinking, “What’s the tech angle on all this Steph?”  Well, it’s the amazing app that puts all of Mint.com’s capability at your fingertips.  You can do just about everything on your smartphone that you can do on the website and get instant alerts when you make large deposits or purchases, have fees charged against your account, or go over budget.  The app is free and is available for iPhone or Android.

Personally, I’ve tried this type of money management tracking before with Microsoft Money and Quicken, and this is truly the easiest, most comprehensive tool I’ve tried.  The fact that you can track all of your financial info quickly and easily on your phone is invaluable when you’re always on the go.  So now there’s no excuse – keep your mind on your money and your money on your mind!
